Cooling is heat removal, and heat removal needs three things

A cooling system must absorb heat from indoor air at the evaporator coil, transport it through the refrigerant circuit, and reject it outdoors at the condenser coil. Break any one of the three and the result at the vent looks similar: air that is not cold enough, a system that runs and runs, and a home that keeps warming. Understanding which link is broken is the entire job.

Airflow problems

Airflow is worth checking early because it is the part a homeowner can influence. A filter loaded with fine desert dust reduces air across the coil. Closed or blocked registers, crushed flex duct, a dirty blower wheel or a fouled indoor coil do the same thing. With too little air moving across it, the coil gets colder than intended, moisture condenses and can freeze, and heat removal drops off sharply. Ironically, a frozen coil looks like the system is working very hard while delivering almost nothing.

Heat rejection problems

At the other end, the outdoor condenser must dump heat into air that is already extremely hot. Fine dust and monsoon debris packed between the fins insulate the coil. Vegetation, fencing, stored items or a sand drift too close to the cabinet starves it of air. A failed or weak condenser fan motor removes heat rejection entirely. In each case pressures climb, capacity falls and run time grows.

Refrigerant circuit problems

Refrigerant is not normally consumed during operation. A low charge may indicate leakage or an incorrect previous charge, and the cause should be diagnosed rather than simply adding refrigerant. A low charge reduces the system's ability to absorb heat and often shows up as poor cooling, a small temperature split, longer run times or ice near the indoor coil. Locating and correcting a leak is provider work, and simply adding refrigerant without finding the leak leaves the problem in place.

Load problems that are not equipment failures

Sometimes nothing is broken. A home with west-facing glass, thin attic insulation, leaky attic ductwork and a peak summer afternoon can outrun equipment that is working exactly as designed. Why is my AC running constantly but not cooling?
Common possibilities include a restricted air filter, a dirty indoor or outdoor coil, low refrigerant from a leak, a failed outdoor fan or compressor, duct leakage, a frozen evaporator coil, or a system that simply cannot keep up with extreme afternoon heat gain. Diagnosis requires measurement.
What is a normal temperature difference at the vents?
Many systems produce roughly a 15 to 20 degree drop between return and supply air, though the exact figure varies with equipment, humidity and conditions. A very small difference generally points to a capacity, airflow or refrigerant problem worth having checked.
Should the house always reach the thermostat setting in July?
Not necessarily. During extreme heat, even a healthy correctly sized system may hold a few degrees above a very low setpoint in the late afternoon. A system that drifts far above setting, or never recovers overnight, is a different situation.
There is ice on the refrigerant line. What should I do?

Could my ducts be the reason?
